A young Zimbabwean rapist who handcuffed his victims before sexually violating them was on Tuesday slapped with a 10 year jail term and three strokes of the cane.
The Voice reported that Xolani Dube, 21, who hails from Chichi, a small village along the Zimbabwe – Botswana border pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, stealing from a person and entering the country through an ungazetted point.
Upon entering the country late last year the illegal immigrant is said to have engaged in the callous acts in Gulubane village, in the North East District.
His victims are 15 and 28 years respectively.
"He also threatened to kill the children he found sleeping in the same room with the victims," said Inspector Patrick Mapodisi of Tatitown prosecuting the case.
One of the rape victims is said to have been dragged into the bush were she was raped and only set free when the rapist heard voices of people coming towards them.
"If you report to the police, I will come back for you," Xolani is reported to have told his victim before disappearing into the cover of darkness.
In sentencing the rapist, Francistown Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu indicated that though the offender was fairly young, cases of sexual assault had become prevalent hence sentence should be harsh.
"It is fortunate that the accused wore a condom each time he raped his victims. One can only imagine the dangers the victims would have been exposed to had he not done so", said Mulalu.
For each count of rape Xolani who is a first offender was sentenced to 10 years, 12 months for stealing a cellphone from one of his victims and three strokes of the cane for entering Botswana illegally.
All of which are to run concurrently.
However, he has two pending motor vehicle theft cases before Selebi Phikwe courts.
On the sidelines, the young rapist blamed his criminal activities on alcohol, a habit he regrets and swears to abandon when he comes out of prison.
