A self-styled prophet from Gweru has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of raping a congregant who had sought spiritual assistance at his shrine in Mkoba 4.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident involved a 22-year-old woman who had approached the offender for spiritual help.
The prophet allegedly convinced the woman that she was being followed by an evil spirit that was driving away potential suitors and preventing her from finding a partner.
He reportedly told the victim that the only way to rid her of the spirit was through a special cleansing ritual that required her to accompany him to a secluded area for prayer.
Believing the claims, the woman went with the offender to a bushy area behind Mkoba Cemetery, where the purported cleansing ceremony was conducted.
The NPAZ said the ritual involved the use of rapoko grains and a clay plate, commonly referred to as an *mbiya* or *udiwo*.
After completing the ritual, the prophet raped the woman.
The victim later reported the matter to police at Mkoba Police Station, leading to the offender's arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Following the trial, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 15 years' imprisonment.
The case adds to growing concerns over the abuse of religious authority by individuals who exploit vulnerable people seeking spiritual guidance and assistance.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any form of abuse or exploitation disguised as religious or spiritual practices.
