Zimbabwe’s grassroots sports development system is set for revival following the signing of a US$200 000 partnership between the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Betterbrands, aimed at strengthening the National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) sports programme nationwide.
The agreement seeks to rebuild talent‑identification and development structures in schools while creating opportunities for young athletes across all ten provinces.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo said the initiative was driven by the belief that Zimbabwe’s greatest resource lies in its young people.
“For too long, gifted young Zimbabweans have fallen through the cracks of an underfunded grassroots sport system. The talented footballer in Binga, the sprinter in Beitbridge, the athlete in Mutare — many young people never got the opportunity to showcase their abilities because the system failed to identify and nurture them,” he said.
Under the partnership, the ministry and Betterbrands will strengthen talent‑identification frameworks, establish structured coaching and competitive programmes at secondary‑school level, and create pathways from grassroots participation to elite sport.
The programme will also use sport to instil discipline, teamwork and resilience among learners.
The minister said the initiative aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision under the mantra Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo, emphasising investment in youth development.
“Betterbrands has chosen to invest in our own people, and my ministry will ensure every dollar reaches the young people it is meant to serve,” he said.
The revival of the NASH sports development programme is expected to boost school competitions and widen opportunities for talented athletes to progress to national and international platforms.
