Teaching materials shortage hits JM Nkomo Polytechnic

JOSHUA Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic, which introduced the teaching of minority languages in its curriculum this year, is facing a shortage of the teaching materials for the languages.
In an interview on Friday, the lecturer-in-charge of local marginalised languages, Ms Maretha Dube said they were facing a critical shortage of teaching material for minority languages which she said was a serious challenge.
"We have reasonable classes of about 31 students which have been enrolled to be taught how to teach marginalised languages including TshiVenda, SeSotho and TjiKalanga. However, at the moment we are teaching students methodology without majoring into the detailed content owing to the limited learning and teaching material," said Ms Dube.
She said the polytechnic was appealing to members of the public to submit unpublished manuscripts oil the three marginalised languages.
"The institution is in the process of mobilising teaching and learning materials in TshiVenda, Sesotho and TjiKalanga. We are calling for unpublished manuscripts in poetry, short stories, plays and folktales.
"The institution's editorial board will edit the material for possible publication and will acknowledge all the material that will be compiled," said Ms Dube.
"This literature will assist in the development and preservation of our languages, culture, heritage and values which have been marginalised," she said.
