A handful Zimbabweans resident in United Kingdom who have broken the norm of regular shift work and timesheet custom to embark on business and community projects have been recognised at the recent Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion & Television Awards this past Saturday.
The BEFFTAs as they are candidly known, brings together the entire black community of all origins in the UK and beyond, to recognise and celebrate those who have performed outstandingly within their disciplines.
Among the nominated are two that went on to scoop the awards, DJ Mkhukwini who is prominent for the Kasiluv events and a resident Radio jockey at BBC radio who went home with the DJ of the Year gong and Zuwa Re who grabbed the Female Fashion Designer of the Year award.
Also specially acknowledged and honoured were Betty Makoni and Dr Philip Chiyangwa who both received honorary awards on humanitarian merit. Betty Makoni is well scribed of for her outspoken stance of girl child empowerment and highlight to the plight of the underprivileged.
Also acknowledged and nominated in respective categories were a prominent Zimbabwean community radio station ZimOnline Radio, which has received the nomination 3years running now for the Radio Station of the Year award, alongside the station head Simbarashe Patrick Nyanhanga who was in the running for the Radio personality award.
ZimOnline Radio through listener reviews maintains an over 65% Zimbabwean local content promotion in its programming and has been on the turf in all relevant acknowledgements and recognitions both within the Zimbabwean community and beyond, bagging a handful along the way.
"It is indeed a great honour to receive such an honour of nomination by the BEFFTA and other recognitions. To us, it's a statement that we are walking in the right direction with regards to community cohesion and delivering to our objective. For me personally, it remains a huge privilege to lead a team that goes beyond the eye can see", said Nyanhanga, ZimOnline Radio chief.
Asked how he feels about the opening of Zimbabwean airwaves and the position of their station, Simbarashe added;
"It's monumental that the Zimbabwean authorities acknowledge the media vaccum and swiftly move to address, however to those jumping on the wagon, it will not be just a walk in the park. Success in media is determined by prudence, long term goals and vision than the desire to be signed. Yes we have our application in process, at the same time we do not fool ourselves that it will be an instant process no cloud our already set vision".
Other nominated Zimbabwean included Chelsea Mandizha and Nyasha Matonhodze
