Two directors of a Mutare-based company have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing an illicit alcoholic brew under unhygienic conditions and in violation of public health regulations.
The arrests were confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who said the suspects are directors of Teku Teku Company.
"Police in Mutare arrested two directors of Teku Teku Company for manufacturing illicit brew under unhygienic conditions and in violation of health regulations," said Commissioner Nyathi.
Authorities reportedly recovered and impounded equipment used in the illegal operation as investigations continue.
The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the production and distribution of unregulated alcoholic beverages and other potentially harmful substances.
Commissioner Nyathi warned companies and individuals against engaging in activities that endanger public health and urged businesses to comply with all legal and regulatory requirements governing food and beverage production.
"The ZRP urges companies to comply with all legal and health requirements and warns that decisive action will be taken without fear or favour against individuals and companies engaged in peddling dangerous drugs or involved in the manufacturing of illicit substances," he said.
The police have not yet disclosed the type of brew being produced or the quantities involved.
Authorities have in recent years intensified operations against illicit alcohol producers amid concerns over public health risks associated with unregulated beverages manufactured outside approved standards.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
