ERECTION of the Joshua Nkomo statue to be mounted along Main Street is expected to be completed by October 18.
This is according to one of the major contractors, Mr John Matsunge of Joab Construction and Engineering Services.
"We are moving at a very fast speed so that we are able to beat the deadline. Most of the work has been completed and what is now left is to do cladding before putting terrazzo," he said.
Last week, the outgoing Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi made a brief stopover at the site.
Mr Matsunge said Mohadi was impressed with the rate and at which work was progressing.
"Minister Mohadi expressed satisfaction with progress made so far. We are working with various partners including the Department of Roads who are also working on constructing the road," he said.
Mr Matsunge said the intersection of 8th Avenue and Main Street on which Dr Nkomo's statue would be erected would be turned into a round-about.
Mohadi said the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, which falls under his ministry was allocated a substantial amount to complete the project.
The statue is presently kept at the Bulawayo History Museum.
The Government through NMMZ is working with the Bulawayo City Council to erect Dr Nkomo's statue in honour of late nationalist who contributed immensely to the country's liberation struggle and also contributed to the development of the country after independence.
