Cape Town - Low-cost African carrier fastjet says they are looking at launching direct flights between Cape Town and Victoria Falls' new airport in Zimbabwe in the "fourth quarter of 2016 at the earliest".
This is according to Richard Bodin, fastjet's chief operating officer, who told Traveller24 that the route was still in the early planning phases and that while an end-of-year launch date would be ideal, "a later date is expected".
The airline recently launched double-daily flights from Johannesburg to Harare, as well as thrice-weekly flights from Joburg to Victoria Falls. According to Bodin, the airline's routes from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe continue to see growth, especially its flights to Victoria Falls.
He admits, however, despite strong demand, that "fastjet's revenue has been negatively affected by a strong dollar and the airline has had to trim down frequencies on marginal routes".
South Africans can currently travel from OR Tambo International Airport to destinations such as Victoria Falls, Harare, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
