HIGHLANDERS Football Club head coach, Mkhuphali "Mr Cooper" Masuku (31) has gone under the knife!
At a time when the country aims to circumcise 80% of young men in a drive against HIV/Aids pandemic, the former Amazulu and Bosso combative player has also taken the initiative.
The dreadlocked Bosso mentor was circumcised last Thursday.
"I got circumcised last week on Thursday and I am slowly recovering. I have been with Grassroots Soccer (GRS) for over eight years, as a coach, mentor and advocate for teaching youth about HIV/Aids preventions. This has been a fulfilling period as I have had a difference in the lives of the youth delivering the GRS curriculum to kids.
Throufh facilitating the GRS curriculum, I am keeping myself informed about the growing facts of HIV prevention and treatment. We now know that male circumcision decreases the male rate of contracting HIV by 60 percent. Male circumcision also reduces the risk of contracting a number of STIs.
"These facts and my position to be a role model to the youth I work with have led me to decide to circumcise. I want to encourage all my players, teammates, friends and youths to get circumcised as well," said Masuku who cut his football teeth in Gwanda.
He was a member of the Zimbabwe under 23 team that had the like of Benjani Mwaruwari, Joel Luphahla, the late Blessing "Yogo Yogo" Makunike and the former Highlanders midfield magician Sizabantu Khoza.
In September last year Masuku took over the coaching reigns at Bosso from expatriate Mohammed Fathi.
The circumcision healing process goes up to six weeks, which means the coach will not go under the sheets for the period.
Meanwhile, GRS is going to hold a Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) tournament that will see Njube Secondary School, Sikhulile Secondary School and Masotsha High both boys and girls teams fight it out for the top honours at Lobengula Rugby ground on Saturday.
"In our bid to help the members of communities to assess to testing services and get tested we are going to have a VCT tournament which is on the programme that we have to normalise testing. Testing has to become part of people's daily lives. We call upon people to come in their numbers," said GRS's VCT coordinator Linderose Moyo.
"The services will be for free. In this regard we are working hand in glove with New Start Centre, Matabeleland Aids Council (MAC) and Mpilo OI Clinic," she added.
GRS was founded by former Highlanders player and coach Methembe Ndlovu, Kirk Fredrick, Tommy Clark and Ethan Zohn in 2003.
GRS which has employees that include Highlanders skipper Gilbert Banda, football veterans Gift Lunga (jnr) and Danisa Phiri, Zimbabwe Saints' Castro Ndebele, former Mighty Warriors duo Sithethelelwe Sibanda and Precious "Gringo" Mpala and former Bosso great Netsai Moyo among recently got registered as volunteers in the organisation.
