Former Cabinet Minister Walter Mzembi has been granted US$1 000 bail by the High Court in Harare while awaiting judgment in a case in which he is accused of defrauding Government of US$2 million during his tenure as Tourism and Hospitality Minister.

Mzembi was granted bail on Monday with several conditions, including depositing the bail amount, surrendering his passport, residing at his Harare home, and restricting his movement to within a 30-kilometre radius of the court.

He is facing allegations linked to the alleged donation of television sets intended for 2010 FIFA World Cup fan parks without approval from Treasury or Cabinet.

Mzembi was arrested in June last year upon his return from South Africa.

His lawyer, Emmanuel Samundombe, said the former minister remained in custody due to a procedural mix-up in release paperwork but is expected to be released on Tuesday.

The case continues to proceed in the High Court as the State finalises its position ahead of judgment.
