A POLICE officer based at Morris Depot in Harare yesterday appeared before magistrate, Barbara Chimboza facing a fraud charge after he allegedly demanded and pocketed a $10 bribe from a client seeking a police clearance record.
Henock Henock was granted $50 bail and remanded to July 6 for trial.
It is the State's case that on May 29 this year, the complainant, who is not named in court papers, arrived at the Morris Depot intending to have her fingerprints vetted for police clearance.
The State alleges she was then approached by Henock, who masqueraded as a member of the Criminal Investigation Department and promised to facilitate the process.
Henock took $10 from the complainant, claiming it was a facilitation fee, requested the complainant's phone number and asked her to wait for a while.
The State alleges Henock pocketed the money and deceitfully cleared the fingerprints purporting that they had been duly vetted and the results endorsed accordingly.
After about 10 minutes, Henock called the complainant advising her to collect her cleared fingerprints at the main gate. Henock then handed over her processed fingerprints without a receipt of proof of payment.
The offence came to light after one Superintendent Ndlovu asked the complainant to produce a receipt, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Linda Gadzikwa appeared for the State.
