A 60-YEAR-OLD Gwanda woman died during a church service after allegedly succumbing to high blood pressure.

Matabeleland South Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred on Tuesday at around 9PM at a Roman Catholic Church service in Jahunda Ultra Suburb.

He said investigations were underway to ascertain the cause of Liana Tlou's death.

"I can confirm that we received a case of sudden death involving a 60-year-old woman, Liana Tlou of Senondo Suburb in Gwanda. Tlou was attending a church service at a house in Ultra Suburb on Tuesday at around 9PM when she started complaining of weakness and exhaustion.

"She was taken outside for some air and some of the church members tried to administer first aid but her condition continued deteriorating until she lost consciousness. She was rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival," he said.

Insp Ndebele said the matter was reported to the police who attended the scene. He said police were treating the matter as a case of sudden death as they were yet to establish whether Tlou was suffering from an illness which could have led to her death.

The councillor for Ward 9, Thulani Moyo, said the death of Tlou came as a huge blow to the community. He said the woman who was a retired nurse was one of the senior citizens who had contributed immensely towards developing the community.

He said family members had indicated that she had a history of suffering from high blood pressure and they suspected that it could have caused her death.

"We learnt with great shock of MaTlou's death. I last saw her when she was going for the church service and she looked fine but a few hours later I heard she had passed on.

"She was a retired nurse who was popular for her dedicated service during her term of employment at the Gwanda Provincial Hospital. She has left a huge gap in the community as she was a good example to everyone. Her death is a huge loss not only to her family but the entire community as well," Clr Moyo said.
