The Tsholotsho community in Matabeleland North is appealing for financial assistance to set up a community radio station, covering at least five wards within the district.

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) announced in April that it would license nine more community radio stations and three campus radios stations, adding it would also procure equipment for six newly licensed community radio stations.

That followed the authority's reviewing of broadcasting frequency allotment plans for community and campus radio broadcasting services.

The new community radio station licences will be awarded to Tsholotsho and other areas across Zimbabwe holding a coverage capacity of 40km radius.

Since then villagers in the district have been fundraising to ready themselves for the application process and other modalities for setting up a community radio.

In an appeal widely circulated on social media, Tsholotsho FM aka Zhowane FM coordinator, Ian Nsukuzonke said well-wishers should come forward with whatever they have and support the community project.

He said those in Zimbabwe can use Ecocash number 0782 017 182 for their contributions, adding those outside the country can deposit the money into the Tsholotsho FM account at FNB, Account Number 62900295230, Braamfontein, branch code251905, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The community radio station spearheaded by Zhowane Community Trust and affiliated to Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS).

CITE this week caught up with Nsukuzonke, who said so far R500 had been raised, adding their target is ZWL$ 93, 890.

He however said they were yet to submit their application.

"It's a mixed reaction from the community," said Nsukuzonke.

"Radio is new to most people but funds permitting, we have awareness campaigns lined up. Once the community has been mobilized, then a call/ request for programme content will be made to the community at large."

Nsukuzonke said the radio station will be broadcasting in Ndebele and TjiKalanga

"The Tsholotsho community needs financial assistance to make their own radio station a reality called Zhowane FM," he added.
