The government has cancelled the operating licence of Passion Link Coaches after a fire in an unroadworthy bus killed eight Anglican Diocese of Manicaland pilgrims returning from Bernard Mzeki shrine.
Transport Minister Felix Mhona stated the licence was revoked because the bus lacked a certificate of fitness. Both the bus owner and driver will face prosecution.
The accident injured ten passengers, with three seriously hurt. Six remain hospitalized, one of whom was transferred to another hospital for further treatment.
The fire occurred near Gandanzara Business Centre when the bus, carrying 66 passengers, caught fire due to mechanical faults. While 58 passengers escaped, eight were trapped and died. Forensic investigations are underway to identify the victims.
Minister Mhona, visiting the scene and survivors, noted the high incidence of accidents involving unroadworthy vehicles and confirmed that all Passion Link Coaches buses are now banned. He stressed the importance of road safety and compliance with traffic laws to prevent such tragedies.
Minister Misheck Mugadza expressed condolences and emphasized the need for bus operators to adhere to road safety regulations.
