A tragic incident has unfolded in Zvishavane, where a 27-year-old woman, Talent Sibanda, has been arrested on charges of killing her newborn baby in Takaenda village under Chief Masunda.
The Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the arrest, stating, "Police confirm an infanticide case where a 27-year-old woman strangled her day-old baby and buried the body in her yard. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, around 7 p.m."
According to the police report, the case came to light when Peterson Tauro, Sibanda's uncle, heard rumors that she was no longer pregnant. Concerned, he visited her home to inquire. Sibanda allegedly admitted that she had given birth to a baby girl, whom she then strangled and buried in her yard.
Tauro reported the matter to the police, who responded promptly, exhuming the baby's body and taking it to Zvishavane District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Sibanda was subsequently taken into custody.
The community is reportedly shaken by the incident, and authorities have reminded the public to seek support if they are experiencing distress.
