President Emmerson Mnangagwa is today set to cap 126 graduands at Gwanda State University's (GSU) third graduation ceremony, which will be held at the Epoch Mine Campus sports arena in Filabusi, Insiza district. As the Chancellor of all State Universities, President Mnangagwa will preside over the event, marking another significant milestone in the institution's development.
Today's graduation represents a remarkable 73 percent increase in the number of students capped compared to last year's ceremony, where only 34 graduands were celebrated. GSU's inaugural graduation ceremony in 2022 saw 17 students graduate, underlining the rapid growth of the young institution since its establishment.
GSU, one of Zimbabwe's newest universities, was founded in 2016 by an Act of Parliament (Chapter 25:30), with its roots going back to 2015 when it operated as a College under the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). The primary campus, located on 87 acres in Gwanda along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway, and the additional site at Epoch Mine in Filabusi, provide a dynamic learning environment for its students.
At last year's graduation ceremony, President Mnangagwa pledged increased funding for the development of the institution, reinforcing the government's commitment to expanding access to quality education. As one of the country's youngest universities, GSU has quickly established itself as a key player in regional development, contributing not only to the intellectual growth of students but also to the practical solutions needed in the Matabeleland South province.
Today's ceremony comes just 24 hours after the President capped 6,479 graduands at the 25th graduation ceremony of Midlands State University (MSU) in Gweru. The event was made even more memorable by the presence of the First Lady, Dr. Auxilia Mnangagwa, who graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management. Dr. Mnangagwa, who is also the country's tourism patron, was among the notable graduands of the day.
As Gwanda State University continues to grow and innovate, it remains committed to offering its students a transformative educational experience, paving the way for future leaders who will contribute to the country's development. Today's event marks another important step in the university's journey toward academic excellence and regional development.
