A Chinese man, Chen Mo Yun, 44, believed to be the mastermind behind the illegal cremation of a woman in Harare, has been deported to China. Chen was flown out of the country last Wednesday after being implicated in a criminal operation that involved the unlawful cremation of Huang Tian Song, a Chinese national who died in Harare earlier this year.
The incident dates back to May when five other Chinese nationals — Chen Ying, 44, Xia Wexing, 40, Guo Weilin, 32, Yan Qi, 36, and Wang Huasheng, 35 — were fined US$200 each after being convicted for the illegal cremation of Huang Tian Song's remains. The men had obtained a burial order by falsely claiming they had consent from Song's relatives, which led to the unlawful cremation of her body without proper authorization.
After the five were deported to China, investigations continued. It has since emerged that the five men were interrogated in China, where they implicated Chen Mo Yun as the mastermind behind the operation. The investigation revealed that Yun had allegedly been running a mafia-style operation in Harare, orchestrating the illegal activities.
Yun's deportation follows a request from Chinese authorities, who had been conducting their own investigation into the matter. It is still unclear what the individuals involved were attempting to conceal by cremating Song's body.
The tragic death of Huang Tian Song occurred on May 22 at Trauma Centre in Borrowdale, Harare. The cause of her death remains mysterious, and the illegal handling of her remains has raised concerns about potential criminal activities and exploitation of foreign nationals in Zimbabwe. The case continues to attract attention as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the operation.
