Two police officers from Sakubva Police Station in Mutare have been arrested for allegedly assaulting investigators from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) during a bribery investigation.
Sergeant Mduduzi Makina (39) and Constable Elliot Gava (42) are accused of obstructing justice by physically attacking ZACC officers, injuring them, and seizing evidence during the altercation.
The incident occurred on December 11, when a ZACC team was investigating allegations of bribery at a roadblock near Mutare Teachers College.
According to reports, the ZACC investigators had confiscated the roadblock declaration book as part of their evidence-gathering process. Sgt. Makina and Const. Gava allegedly confronted the investigators, manhandled them, and forcefully retrieved the seized document.
The two officers have been charged with obstructing justice and assault. They are expected to appear at the Mutare Magistrate Court today (Tuesday).
The incident highlights growing tensions between anti-corruption authorities and some members of the police force accused of unethical practices. Both ZACC and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have yet to issue official statements regarding the case.
