Seven suspected armed robbers were arrested in Harare on Monday, just hours after they raided a Southerton-based company and made off with a Nissan NP300 vehicle, a safe containing US$12,000, and other valuables.
The robbery, which occurred at around 2:20 AM, also saw the gang stealing a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) video recorder, an HP laptop, and other items. However, swift action by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide Crack Team led to the apprehension of all seven suspects by the afternoon.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, emphasizing the police's ongoing efforts to tackle armed robbery.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of seven suspects in connection with a case of armed robbery which occurred in Southerton on January 20 at around 2:20 AM," Nyathi said.
The suspects were identified as Tapiwanashe Bakasa (30), Rodgers Magreen (28), Tinashe Thompson (30), Tatenda Mashayamombe (29), Peter Mahwite (49), Anymore Gatsi (38), and Wilson Masvosve (35).
The stolen Nissan NP300 was found abandoned at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Julius Nyerere Street in Harare's central business district. Detectives acted on information that the suspects had initially taken the vehicle to a house in Mufakose before dumping it in the CBD.
Investigations led to the arrest of Tapiwanashe Bakasa in Mufakose, where police recovered the safe containing various company documents and the stolen CCTV video recorder. Bakasa's confession implicated Rodgers Magreen, who was apprehended in Stoneridge. Police recovered US$1,565 and the stolen HP laptop in his possession.
Magreen then led detectives to Tinashe Thompson, who was arrested at Chibwe Shopping Centre in Stoneridge. During his arrest, police recovered a Unique Pistol with an empty magazine, pepper spray, an okapi knife, US$800, and a motorcycle reportedly purchased using the stolen funds.
Further investigations resulted in the arrest of Tatenda Mashayamombe, Peter Mahwite, Anymore Gatsi, and Wilson Masvosve in Mbare later the same day.
The successful operation underscores law enforcement's commitment to addressing rising armed robbery cases. Commissioner Nyathi reiterated the Zimbabwe Republic Police's "zero tolerance" policy toward such crimes and vowed to bring all offenders to justice.
Police are continuing investigations into the matter as they work to recover the remaining stolen funds.
