Makandiwa says he will accept Chivayo gift

UFIC founder Emmanuel Makandiwa says his initial refusal was based on principle, not public pressure
Charismatic preacher and founder of the United Family International Church (UFIC), Emmanuel Makandiwa, says he will now accept a gift from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo after previously declining it.
Addressing congregants during a church service over the weekend, Makandiwa said the gift had remained available and that he was now expecting Chivayo to deliver it.
“Leaving this place, we are already expecting that the gentleman will bring our gift. The gifts are there. I’m the one who had not collected. We will receive them, pray for you and bless you,” Makandiwa told the congregation.
The prominent preacher emphasized that his earlier decision to turn down the gift had not been influenced by public criticism surrounding Chivayo, who has faced scrutiny over his wealth and government-linked business dealings.
According to Makandiwa, his decision was rooted in principle rather than public opinion.
“You have to be a seer for you to be able to give me. Not just a giver. But the person is humiliated, castigated as if he is asking me. No, he wants to give,” he said.
Makandiwa revealed that he had personally communicated his position to Chivayo when the businessman first offered the gift.
“I had actually communicated with him at the time. I said: ‘I had received the gift, but I’m not going to take it because I have seen how many people you have been giving to,’” he said.
His remarks represent a change in stance from last month when Chivayo disclosed that Makandiwa and his wife, Ruth, had declined an undisclosed gift, choosing instead to offer prayers for him.
Chivayo also revealed that other prominent figures had rejected his offers. These include Eunor Guti, the widow of the late ZAOGA Forward in Faith Ministries founder Ezekiel Guti, and Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Nqobile Magwizi.
Eunor Guti said she turned down an offer of a luxury vehicle and cash out of respect for the values and principles upheld by her late husband. Magwizi, meanwhile, said accepting vehicles from Chivayo would have violated football governance and conflict-of-interest standards because of the businessman’s links to clubs that fall under ZIFA's jurisdiction.
Despite the high-profile refusals, several religious leaders have accepted vehicles and cash gifts from Chivayo. They include Uebert Angel and his wife Beverly, Nehemiah Mutendi, Ian Ndlovu, Walter Magaya, Talent Madungwe and Trymore Muparinga.
