ZCC urges peaceful July 31 protests

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has reaffirmed that the right to protest is protected under the Constitution, urging authorities to safeguard fundamental freedoms while calling on citizens to exercise their rights peacefully and within the confines of the law.

In its latest Pastoral Letter, the ZCC said the freedoms of assembly, association and expression are guaranteed under Sections 58 to 61 of the Constitution and should be respected by all stakeholders.

The church body called on the Government, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other security institutions to uphold and protect these constitutional rights, while encouraging citizens to conduct any demonstrations peacefully, responsibly and lawfully.

The statement comes ahead of planned demonstrations on July 31, which have been organised by civic groups and opposition parties to protest against recent constitutional amendments.

The amendments, which have generated significant public debate, include provisions extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa's tenure by two years, increasing presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, and changing the method of electing the President from a direct popular vote to election by Parliament.

Opposition party ZAPU has notified the police of its intention to hold demonstrations on July 31, in line with legal requirements governing public gatherings.

The planned protests have also received support from the People's Coalition – Sungano yeVanhu/Ubumbano Lomphakathi, a coalition of civic organisations campaigning against the constitutional changes and raising broader concerns over governance and public policy.

Meanwhile, police have arrested Bhekimpilo Mbedzi, an activist affiliated with the National Democratic Working Group led by Job Sikhala, over allegations related to mobilising support for the planned demonstrations.

Organisers say the demonstrations are intended to highlight a range of political, economic and social concerns, including governance, corruption, the cost of living and economic hardship.

Authorities have not publicly announced whether the demonstrations will be allowed to proceed but have previously urged citizens to maintain peace and comply with the law.
