Zimbabwean executive shot dead in South Africa

A Zimbabwean business executive employed by South Africa's Transnet Engineering was shot dead after an alleged dispute linked to his residential properties, with family members saying he was struck by six bullets during the attack.
Jeremiah Madondo was killed on July 19, 2026, in South Africa, where he had worked for Transnet Engineering for 28 years.
At the time of his death, Madondo was serving as the Acting Corridor Quality Manager for the North Corridor, based in Vryheid.
In a condolence message, Transnet Engineering described Madondo as a dedicated employee who had served the company for nearly three decades.
"It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our dear colleague Mr Jeremiah Madondo on the 19th of July 2026," the company said.
"Mr Madondo joined the Transnet Engineering family on the 28th of January 1998. At the time of his passing, he was acting as a Corridor Quality Manager for North Corridor based in Vryheid. Transnet Engineering would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time."
A memorial service was held in South Africa last Friday before Madondo's body was repatriated to Zimbabwe.
He was laid to rest on Sunday at his family home in Hayisoswi Village, Rusape.
Family spokesperson Ishmael Madondo said the family had been informed that the killing followed a dispute involving three residential properties owned by the deceased in South Africa.
According to the family, tenants occupying two of the properties had allegedly been instructed to vacate the houses before August 1, after claims that the properties would be taken over by South Africans.
"We lost a breadwinner, a loving man who has been a source of inspiration," said Ishmael.
"We have been informed that he was shot to death over his three residential properties."
He added that the family had been told the tenants received warnings to leave the houses because there were claims that by August 1, 2026, ownership of the properties would change.
"We laid Jeremiah to rest in Rusape," he said.
Authorities in South Africa have not publicly confirmed the motive for the killing or announced any arrests in connection with the case. Police investigations are continuing.
