Gwanda Municipality is set to introduce paid parking in the Central Business District (CBD) as part of its efforts to maintain order and improve revenue collection in the mining town.

This move comes alongside heightened enforcement of traffic bylaws by the local authority, with council police increasing patrols in the CBD to ensure vehicles are properly parked and to prevent illegal taxi pickup points.

In an interview, Gwanda Mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo confirmed the plans for paid parking, emphasizing the need for order to attract investors.

"We have set the ball rolling to ensure that we enforce our traffic bylaws. For starters, our police department has intensified patrols to fine those who are caught on the wrong side of the law. We want to ensure that we bring order to the town. If we want to attract investors, we need to ensure that there is order in our town," Alderman Moyo said.

He added that the council is currently working on the modalities of the paid parking system, considering whether it will be managed directly by the council or through a partnership.

"The council has been losing out on a lot of revenue that we are supposed to be collecting through our bylaws," the mayor noted.

The introduction of paid parking is expected to improve traffic management and generate much-needed revenue for the municipality.
