A police officer stationed at ZRP Ruwa has appeared in court facing allegations of fatally assaulting a suspect with a hoe handle, resulting in the suspect's death at a local clinic.
Prince Ndavambi, 39, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo on Wednesday and was not asked to plead. The court heard that Ndavambi had arrested the now-deceased individual in connection with a case involving assault and theft.
According to the State, after taking the suspect to ZRP Ruwa, Ndavambi allegedly used a hoe handle to beat him all over the body before detaining him in the police holding cells.
Later that evening, the suspect's condition reportedly worsened, prompting his transfer to Ruwa Rehabilitation Clinic. He died the following day.
Two post-mortem examinations were carried out, but the precise cause of death has yet to be officially determined. As a result, the State did not oppose bail, citing the pending confirmation of the cause of death.
Ndavambi was granted bail of US$300 and is expected to return to court as investigations continue.
The case has sparked public concern over the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers and has renewed calls for greater accountability within the police service.
