A dispute between a Harare woman and her polygamist husband has spilled into the civil courts, with the wife accusing him of using part of her salary to lavish his second wife, including buying her a car.

Shalom Madziyendesa and Tafadzwa Manyora are locked in a bitter legal battle that unfolded before magistrate Johanna Mukwesha at the Harare Civil Court.

Madziyendesa told the court that after Manyora abandoned her and their children, he stopped contributing to the household expenses, leaving her to struggle alone.

"When Manyora abandoned me and the children, he stopped contributing to the household and I struggled to maintain that house on my own," she said. "All I want is fairness. Let him take responsibility for his choices without robbing me of my future. He has no right to come back now and demand a share when he left us to suffer."

Manyora, who hails from Ushewokunze and practices polygamy, countered that Madziyendesa had taken advantage of his absence while he was staying with his second wife in Botswana, asserting ownership over their jointly built house without his consent.

"She took advantage of my absence while I was staying with my second wife in Botswana and claimed the house was hers alone," Manyora said in court. He added that Madziyendesa had been painting him as an irresponsible father who neglects their children in their neighbourhood.

The dispute, he claimed, has also affected him emotionally, with allegations that Madziyendesa threatened to poison his food.

"We built that house together and now she wants to kick me out as if I'm a tenant," Manyora lamented.

In response to the escalating conflict, magistrate Mukwesha granted Manyora a protection order and advised the couple to seek legal counsel to resolve their ownership dispute.

The case highlights the complex challenges that can arise in polygamous relationships, especially concerning property rights and familial responsibilities. The court will continue to monitor the situation as the couple navigates their legal differences.
