Two major link roads in Katanga, Norton - Shonhiwa Drive and Koshen Drive - have officially reopened to traffic following over three years of rehabilitation under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP 2), launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Norton Council town secretary, Mr. Kizito Muhomba, reported during the 298th Ordinary Council meeting on Monday that the reopening will allow public service vehicles to use the Katanga bus rank for a fee.

"The closure of the roads was affecting motorists and businesses in Katanga. Buses were now using routes in residential areas, posing a danger to the lives of the community," he said.

Mr. Muhomba also updated the council on progress regulating private land developers. Research recently conducted by the District Development Coordinator (DDC) has been handed over to the council and is expected to improve how the town addresses challenges posed by problematic land developers.

Additionally, the council discussed a request for a "look and learn" visit on landfill management. Mr. Muhomba said: "We are going to write to the Minister requesting for authority to do so, and once granted, we will be visiting, I think, Harare and Bulawayo."

Other items on the council agenda included the lease agreement between Norton Town Council and Premier Soccer League team MWOS. The final draft is in place and will be reviewed at the next Housing Committee meeting before being presented to council.

Lastly, Mr. Muhomba noted that in August, council representatives participated in the Tokyo International Youth Conference on African Development. Attendees included the director of finance (acting as town secretary), community development coordinator Ms. Gutsa, and two junior councillors.

The reopening of Shonhiwa Drive and Koshen Drive is expected to ease traffic, enhance business activities, and improve public safety in Katanga.
