Five alleged machete-wielding gangsters accused of unleashing a reign of terror in Killarney and Parklands have been denied bail by the High Court in Bulawayo.

The suspects – Mpho Ncube, Thabani Zondo, Thembalani Sibanda, Ashoton Ncube, and Shelton Ngwenya – face six charges, including armed robbery and malicious damage to property.

Magistrate Mark Dzira ruled that the men were a flight risk after they allegedly gave detectives false addresses. He further noted that the seriousness of the offences, which carry sentences of up to 20 years, made bail inappropriate.

The court heard that on 29 July, the gang smashed Zibusiso Zondo's Honda Fit before raiding several homes in the two suburbs, stealing valuables and leaving behind extensive damage.

Police homicide detectives launched swift investigations that led to the suspects' arrest.

The five men were remanded in custody and will stand trial on 22 September.
