A Bulawayo company has been fined US$400 after it was caught illegally trading in bleaching creams worth nearly US$1 000.

Luzern Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd, represented in court by saleslady Simelweyinkosi Kanye of Bellevue suburb, was convicted of selling unregistered medicines when it appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube.

Prosecutor Mehluli Ndlovu told the court that detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit received a tip-off on September 3 about the illegal activity. Acting on the information, police raided the company's shop along Josiah Chinamano Street in the city centre and discovered large quantities of unregistered skin-lightening products.

The haul included 176 × 500ml bottles of Power White Extra Whitening Cream, 328 × 135ml and 126 × 330ml bottles of Carotene Cream, as well as 780 × 3ml bottles of Tsunami.

When asked to provide a valid licence authorising the sale of the bleaching creams, the company failed to do so, resulting in the seizure of the products and subsequent prosecution.
