A 24-year-old man from Goromonzi was crushed to death by a train near Melfort in Mashonaland East Province on Sunday morning.
Police identified the deceased as Anesu Kurima of Eureka Farm, Goromonzi District. He reportedly died after both his legs were crushed by a train along the Harare–Mutare railway line.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at the 36-kilometre peg.
"Reports are that on October 5, 2025, in the morning, a fatal rail accident occurred at the 36 km peg along the Harare–Mutare railway line, where one person was killed," said Inspector Chazovachiyi.
According to police, train operator George Moyo was driving along the route when he saw a man lying across the railway line with earphones in his ears. Despite his efforts, the train ran over Kurima, severely injuring his legs.
"Moyo managed to stop the train, but the now-deceased sustained fractured legs and died upon admission at Parirenyatwa Hospital," said the police spokesperson.
ZRP Goromonzi officers and National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) officials attended the scene. The body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Police say investigations into the tragic incident are underway.
