2 men jailed for killing prison officer

Two men from Mutare have each been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officer, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has confirmed.

In a statement, the NPAZ said the convicts were found guilty of killing Tapiwa Mutyasira, a ZPCS officer, in an incident that occurred between March 3 and March 4, 2023.

The court heard that the two men attacked and fatally assaulted Mutyasira under circumstances described as brutal and unprovoked. Their actions led to his death, prompting a thorough investigation that resulted in their arrest and conviction.

Following the trial, the court imposed 45-year jail terms on each of the accused as punishment for the heinous crime.

The NPAZ reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for victims of violent crime, saying the sentences send a strong message that such offences will not be tolerated in Zimbabwe.
