Brigadier General (Rtd) Mzheri declared national hero

Brigadier General (Retired) Victor Mpandasekwa Mzheri, who passed away on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, has been declared a National Hero.

The announcement was delivered to the family by the Minister of State for National Security, Honourable Lovemore Matuke, at the Mzheri family residence in Borrowdale on Wednesday evening.

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) earlier confirmed the passing of Brigadier General (Rtd) Mzheri, aged 75, who died at a local health facility in Harare. In a statement, ZNA Commander Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu described the late officer as a decorated liberation war veteran who served the nation with distinction both during and after the liberation struggle.

During the liberation war, Brigadier General (Rtd) Mzheri operated under the Chimurenga name Cde Khetani Khanye. After independence, he continued his service in the national army, contributing significantly to Zimbabwe's post-war reconstruction and defense establishment.

He is survived by four children - Anesu, Ropafadzai, Tinashe, and Khanye.

Mourners are gathered at House Number 189, Helensvale, Borrowdale, Harare. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
