The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) has confirmed that a Chinese miner, Cai Yulong, 58, from Stone Still Mine 10, Marandure Farm, Zhombe, appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates' Court facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and assault.

The charges relate to a deadly incident on 26 May 2024 at Blackhand 10 Mine, Zhombe, Kwekwe. According to reports, four men - Goni Goni (23), Komborerai Shariwa (24), John Muchawaya (34), and Lovemore Mapfanya (20) - from Village Tirivanhu, Chief Njelele, Gokwe, were working underground when they allegedly entered a shaft belonging to Cai Yulong at the nearby Blue Belle Mine.

It is alleged that Cai, armed with a pistol, confronted the group. Goni Goni was reportedly shot once in the left thigh and died at the scene. John Muchawaya sustained three gunshot wounds - one to the left knee, one to the right ankle, and one to the left thigh - and is currently receiving treatment at Kwekwe General Hospital. Lovemore Mapfanya was allegedly struck on the head with a fist by the accused but managed to escape and report the incident to the police.

Following the report, Cai Yulong was arrested and remanded in custody. He is scheduled to return to court on 11 June 2024.

The NPA confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
