The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe has issued a detailed advisory to its nationals, urging them to exercise prudence, comply with local laws, and prioritise personal safety when investing or conducting business in the country.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account titled "Important Notice to Chinese Nationals: A Reminder on Investment and Business Operations in Zimbabwe," the Embassy emphasised the need for Chinese citizens and companies to conduct thorough due diligence and risk assessments before committing capital to projects in Zimbabwe. It advised prospective investors to familiarise themselves with the nation's political, economic, social, and legal environment and to understand community dynamics, traditions, and business culture to avoid controversies or disputes.

The Embassy also underscored the importance of security, urging Chinese nationals to implement proactive measures such as hiring professional security services, strengthening physical safeguards, and maintaining comprehensive contingency plans for emergencies.

Strict adherence to Zimbabwean laws and regulations was described as the "non-negotiable foundation" for all business operations. The Embassy advised that any disputes should be resolved through legal channels and encouraged consultation with qualified legal counsel. In cases of theft or robbery, nationals were urged to prioritise safety and immediately report incidents to the police.

Highlighting the sensitivity surrounding firearms, the statement reiterated that illegal possession is strictly prohibited and that all legally authorised firearms must be managed in accordance with the law.

The Embassy further called on Chinese businesses to contribute positively to Zimbabwe's development through community engagement, fair labour practices, and environmental stewardship. It encouraged corporate social responsibility initiatives as a means to build mutual trust and foster social progress.

The notice also reminded nationals to safeguard their legitimate rights through legal avenues and to respond strategically to disinformation or unfair treatment by engaging legal counsel and relevant authorities.

Reaffirming China's zero-tolerance stance on corruption, the Embassy warned against bribery or any form of corrupt practice, reminding nationals that such offences are punishable in both China and Zimbabwe. It urged immediate reporting of any incidents of solicitation or extortion to the Zimbabwe Republic Police or the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

Lastly, the Embassy instructed all Chinese investors to register their businesses and project details with the Embassy after obtaining the necessary local licences. This, it said, would ensure timely consular protection and assistance whenever required.

The advisory comes amid growing Chinese investment in Zimbabwe's mining, construction, and energy sectors, and serves as a reminder of Beijing's emphasis on lawful and responsible business conduct abroad.
