BULAWAYO - MDC president Douglas Mwonzora has launched a blistering attack on President Emmerson Mnangagwa, alleging that he is no longer acting alone but is part of a "group of corrupt people" who have captured the state and are looting Zimbabwe's resources. Speaking at his party's offices in Bulawayo, Mwonzora said the push to extend Mnangagwa's term beyond 2028 is unlawful and part of a broader scheme to entrench elite control.
"We know that President Mnangagwa is now surrounded by dangerous people. In fact, he is no longer just one man - he is a group of corrupt individuals enjoying the wealth of this country at the expense of the masses," Mwonzora said.
He also accused the administration of colluding with Chinese investors in the exploitation of Zimbabwe's mineral wealth, citing poor labor conditions and environmental degradation. "Chinese investors must play by our rules. Our people are underpaid, beaten, and some have even been killed. We want an end to this form of colonialism," he said.
Mwonzora warned that the proposed third-term agenda would destabilize ZANU-PF, the opposition, and Parliament. He argued that the government has done nothing exceptional to warrant an extended term and accused Mnangagwa's allies of using financial incentives to buy loyalty from MPs.
"One of the sweeteners ZANU-PF has offered is an extended term for MPs. Salaries and benefits have been increased, and many are happy to remain in Parliament without earning it," he said.
His remarks come amid growing speculation that ZANU-PF is preparing to amend the constitution to allow Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030. Critics say the move threatens democratic norms and risks deepening political divisions.
