Nine candidates have successfully filed their nomination papers to contest the Nkulumane parliamentary by-election, scheduled for 20 December 2025. The nomination process, conducted at the Tredgold Magistrates Court in Bulawayo, opened at 10:00 AM and closed at 4:00 PM on Thursday, after which the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) confirmed the duly nominated candidates.
The Nkulumane seat fell vacant following the death of Desire Moyo in a car accident on 10 October, prompting what is expected to be one of Bulawayo's most competitive races in recent years. The contest has attracted political veterans, activists, independents, and new entrants from various parties.
Among the nominees is Esther Auxillia Zitha, widow of the late MP, running as an independent. Musician and radio DJ Mothusi Ndlovu, popularly known as Madlela, filed to stand for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction led by Sengezo Tshabangu. The MDC-T is fielding Ethel Sibanda, while Alson Moyo represents EFF Zimbabwe. Independents Rodney Donovan Jele and Mbuso Fuzwayo, secretary-general of Ibetshu LikaZulu, are also in the race. Other candidates include Vivian Siziba for ZAPU, Freedom Murechu for Zanu-PF, and Nompilo Ncube Malala for the Zimbabwe African National Congress.
Ndlovu, or Madlela Skhobokhobo, drew attention upon arrival at the nomination court alongside Tshabangu, accompanied by supporters and party agents. Nkulumane residents who gathered outside expressed mixed expectations, with one saying, "All we want is a responsible leader who will finish the projects started by the late Desire Moyo."
Analysts suggest that the crowded field could split the opposition vote, potentially benefiting Zanu-PF in a constituency traditionally dominated by opposition parties.
The race has already attracted endorsements, with CCC councillor Bruce Moyo, an ally of former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, publicly supporting independent candidate Rodney Jele. "We must ensure Nkulumane is returned to its people and to its dignity. We cannot afford to have Zanu-PF and the 2030 enablers bully our people," Moyo said. He praised Jele as a candidate who understands the governance challenges facing Zimbabwe and can serve the interests of Nkulumane residents.
Jele, a former Ward 22 councillor, is considered one of the strongest contenders, having previously enjoyed significant support in parts of the constituency.
The campaign officially opens next week, with candidates expected to intensify door-to-door mobilisation across Nkulumane ahead of the December by-election.
