Bulawayo-born songbird spreads wings in SA

From the vibrant streets of Bulawayo to the bustling studios of South Africa, singer Sharon Mpala - popularly known as Qhawekazi - is steadily rising as one of the region's most distinctive new voices. With music rooted in faith yet boldly experimental in style, she continues to carve out a space of her own in the competitive Southern African music landscape.
Now based in South Africa, Qhawekazi describes her creative process as spiritually guided and free-flowing rather than structured.
"I do not write songs; they just come on their own. I record them on my phone, practise and then put the parts together depending on what is happening around me," she told NewsDay Life & Style.
Her latest offering, Thethelela Nkosi, is a deeply emotional reflection on the state of society, born - she says - not from pen and paper, but from spiritual inspiration.
"The song simply flowed from my spirit," she said, adding that it is a plea for forgiveness and God's mercy. "There are many sins we have committed; we are asking God to reduce His anger and forgive us."
The accompanying music video seeks to bring that message to life through stark, real-world imagery. Viewers can expect scenes depicting imprisonment and other social struggles, a visual mirror of global hardship.
But Qhawekazi's artistry stretches beyond gospel and devotion-centered work. In a refreshing twist, she recently ventured into amapiano with a new track titled Elamlayithini - a fun, upbeat piece created simply to celebrate joy and rhythm.
"I went to a different studio because I wanted to test myself and see if I could sing amapiano," she said. "I found myself doing wonders."
Her footprint in South Africa continues to grow, recently featuring in a music video alongside acclaimed artist Intaba YaseDubai. The video is expected to premiere on top platforms such as Trace and Channel O - a major milestone for her expanding audience reach.
With two new tracks scheduled for release this month, Qhawekazi is emerging not only as an entertainer, but as a voice of healing, reflection and social awareness. Her music seeks to uplift, provoke thought and push for change - proof that her sound is as powerful as it is purposeful.
