Travellers heading into Zimbabwe over the festive period have been urged to exercise extreme caution, with meteorological experts predicting intense storms and widespread heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.
In a joint advisory, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection warned of severe thunderstorms, potential flash flooding and dangerous lightning activity, prompting heightened alert for road users, tourists and holidaymakers.
The warning, effective from Wednesday, highlights Manicaland, Masvingo, Harare Metropolitan, as well as sections of Mashonaland East and Central as high-risk areas likely to experience severe weather conditions. Forecasts suggest the possibility of over 50mm of rainfall in a single day, accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms.
Meteorologists say the approaching system is being fuelled by cold, moist air drifting from south-eastern South Africa, which is expected to clash with existing warm, moisture-rich conditions over Zimbabwe — a combination that typically triggers violent thunderstorms.
A report released Tuesday indicates that the eastern parts of the country are likely to be most affected, with weather models signalling an escalation in rainfall intensity over the coming days.
"These conditions pose serious risks including flash floods, hazardous road conditions with reduced visibility, landslides and rockfalls," the alert reads.
Authorities have called on motorists, inter-city travellers and those visiting rural communities or tourist destinations to remain vigilant, stay informed on weather developments and follow all guidance issued by Civil Protection Units and local authorities.
With holiday movement expected to surge in the coming weeks, officials warn that preparedness, caution, and real-time information will be crucial in preventing loss of life and minimising disaster risk.
