Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga has called for "ethical leadership" and "clean governance" in Zimbabwe, urging Zanu-PF leaders to reflect on the legacy they are leaving for future generations.

Speaking at Heroes Acre in Harare during the burial of the late retired Brigadier-General Mathias Tizirai Ngarava, Chiwenga, who is currently Acting President while President Emmerson Mnangagwa is on annual leave, stressed the importance of principled leadership in advancing national development.

Chiwenga criticized a system in which a few individuals amass wealth while the majority of citizens continue to live in poverty. "The liberation struggle was not waged so that a few can prosper, while many live in abject poverty… we need ethical leadership and clean governance," he said.

He called on party leaders to consider the kind of legacy they are creating, questioning whether it reflects "sacrifice, patriotic service and national purpose, or plunder."

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions within Zanu-PF about leadership succession, with Chiwenga positioning himself as a proponent of reform and accountability. His comments also echoed broader calls for transparency, integrity, and service-oriented governance in the public sector.
