THIEVES broke into the Chikurubi Farm Prison canteen on Sunday, making off with US$2,673, raising serious concerns over prison security.

The theft was discovered by Felix Chingwaru (27), a canteen salesman, when he arrived for his shift after being alerted by his manager.

According to sources at the prison, the intruder forced open the canteen's back door using an unknown object before taking the cash box and disappearing without a trace.

"Everyone, including officers and inmates, is being interrogated regarding the unlawful entry and theft," a source said.

Senior prison officials expressed outrage over the incident, with the atmosphere described as tense.

The matter has been reported to Highlands Police Station, where investigations are ongoing under case number RRB 6604817.

The incident underscores vulnerabilities in prison security and has sparked calls for stricter monitoring of prison facilities and cash handling procedures.
