A 39-YEAR-OLD woman, Siphumile Saruwaka, was tragically killed in Mutare last Saturday after being allegedly attacked with a highly corrosive substance, believed to be sulphuric acid, in a shocking incident linked to a love triangle.
The accused, Tawanda Kapfumo, of Zororo, Sakubva, Mutare, appeared before Mutare Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, facing murder charges. He was remanded to March 3, 2026, on US$200 bail, with instructions to remain at his given address.
Prosecutor Sandra Mlambo told the court that Kapfumo had been involved in a love affair with Saruwaka, who was also romantically linked to a local mechanic, Prince Toga. The dispute allegedly escalated after Toga discovered the affair, sparking threats from Kapfumo.
On the day of the attack, Kapfumo allegedly tracked Saruwaka and Toga in Mutare Central Business District. While Toga briefly left Saruwaka sleeping in a parked vehicle outside his workplace at Blue Star Workshop, Kapfumo is accused of approaching her and pouring sulphuric acid on her body before fleeing the scene. Saruwaka later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
Her funeral at Dangamvura Cemetery was marked by grief and solemnity. Family members described her as a loving and peace-loving sister, mother, and friend. Her younger sister, Josephine Sakuwanza, said:
"We are deeply devastated as a family. She guided, protected me, and always made sure I was okay. Her death has left a huge gap in our family, and life will never be the same without her."
Saruwaka was also a devoted patron of Fairpark Stars Football Club, a local social soccer team, where teammates and friends gathered to pay their final respects, remembering her as a unifier and caring presence in the community.
The case has sent shockwaves through Mutare, highlighting the dangers of escalating personal disputes and the devastating consequences of violence.
