Bulawayo water supplies worsen as power outages bite

The City of Bulawayo has announced a city-wide water supply interruption following recurring power outages at critical pump stations, disrupting raw water delivery to the city.

Town clerk Christopher Dube said the electricity outages began on February 11 after faults developed on transformers at uMzingwane and Inyankuni pump stations.

"The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company is prioritising the restoration of a stable power supply to these strategic installations," Dube said.

The two affected pump stations supply a combined 40 megalitres of raw water per day to the city's treatment works.

Dube added that Rochester and Cowdray Park pump stations, which feed into the Magwegwe Reservoir, have also been experiencing power supply interruptions since February 12. This has negatively impacted reservoir levels and reduced the availability of treated water to residents.

The disruptions have once again exposed Bulawayo's vulnerability to electricity failures and the fragility of its water infrastructure, raising concerns about the need for reliable backup systems and improved emergency preparedness to avert a prolonged water crisis.

Residents and businesses have been urged to use water sparingly while efforts to restore stable power supplies continue.
