The founder of PHD Ministries, Walter Magaya, has been implicated in a drug trafficking scandal following a police raid at Yadah Hotel where a significant quantity of unregistered and unapproved medicines was allegedly discovered.

The hotel, represented by one of its directors, Mr Donald Makuvaza, appeared before Harare magistrate Lisa Mutendereki and pleaded guilty to charges of possessing unregistered and unapproved complementary medicines. The matter has been remanded to March 10 for plea recording.

According to court documents, the case stems from an incident on November 15 last year when detectives from CID Headquarters in Harare received a tip-off alleging that unregistered and unapproved complementary medicines were being stored in one of the hotel's rooms. Acting on the information, detectives reportedly went to the premises, identified themselves, and carried out a search.

During the operation, authorities allegedly recovered large quantities of various medicines, including metronidazole, clotrimazole, acyclovir topical cream, fluconazole tablets, cotrimoxazole pills, miconazole nitrate vaginal cream, CO Q10 vascular care products, sodium bicarbonate injections, Stillen Aupatillin injections and restorative lip balm. Investigators are also said to have found Compounded Prescription Weekly forms indicating that the medicines were intended for an individual identified as Happiness Mavindire.

The State contends that Yadah Hotel had no legal right to possess the unapproved complementary medicines and unregistered drugs found on the premises. Prosecutors argue that the storage of such medicines without proper authorization contravenes applicable pharmaceutical and regulatory laws.

Although the current charges before the court relate specifically to possession of unregistered and unapproved medicines, the case has attracted widespread attention due to the hotel's links to Magaya, a prominent religious leader and businessman. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing and have not ruled out the possibility of further charges should additional evidence emerge.

The matter is scheduled to return to court on March 10.
