Rural teachers under the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe have threatened to join nurses in industrial action if the government does not urgently review salaries and allowances.

In a letter dated 24 March 2026, ARTUZ said prevailing economic conditions have left civil servants "increasingly incapacitated," arguing that current wages are no longer sufficient to sustain workers given the rising cost of living. The union is calling for a comprehensive wage review, improved transport allowances, and broader engagement with the employer.

As part of its proposed action plan, ARTUZ has suggested a partial withdrawal of labour, including a two-day working week for teachers and the suspension of non-essential duties. The union also indicated that these measures could escalate to a full strike if demands are not met. It further expressed willingness to coordinate with nurses and other labour groups in pursuit of a broader, coordinated labour response.

The move comes as nurses have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to government, demanding a salary of US$540 per month, citing the erosion of real wages and the impact of inflation, particularly on the local currency component of their pay.

In response to mounting pressure from public sector workers, the government has indicated that it is working on a review of salaries and fuel prices. Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said civil servants can expect positive announcements soon, noting that authorities are aware of the economic pressures facing the workforce.

The developments point to growing tension between government and public sector workers, with unions increasing pressure for urgent economic adjustments to address declining real incomes.
