Zimbabwean sprint sensation Tapiwanashe Makarawu has etched his name into the record books after setting a new African record in the 150-metre race at the Miramar Invitational in Miramar, Florida, United States, on Saturday.
Makarawu powered to an impressive 14.96 seconds, finishing second in a world-class field and announcing himself among the fastest athletes over the rarely contested distance.
The race was won by Jamaican sprint star Kishane Thompson, who produced a sensational world record time of 14.92 seconds at the Ansin Sports Complex.
Makarawu's performance eclipsed the long-standing African record of 14.99 seconds set by Namibian legend Frankie Fredericks at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics in Stuttgart, Germany.
In a remarkable twist, the Zimbabwean's time also surpassed the former world record of 14.97 seconds held by British sprint icon Linford Christie since 1994.
The result marks a major milestone for Zimbabwean athletics, further cementing Makarawu's status as one of Africa's brightest sprint prospects on the global stage.
