A 21-year-old woman has been arrested in Harare after she allegedly broke into a city apartment, stole valuables worth US$1 550, and attempted to persuade a security guard to ignore the theft.
Hazel Makavanga is accused of unlawfully entering Warwick Flats in the Avenues area on Tuesday at around 1am, where she allegedly stole two laptops and a laptop bag.
According to police, Makavanga gained access to the building by sneaking through an open bathroom window before proceeding to the complainant's spare bedroom.
She is said to have taken an HP laptop and a Lenovo laptop, along with a laptop bag, before exiting the apartment using keys allegedly found inside the flat.
The matter came to light when a security guard at the complex noticed that she was carrying parcels despite not having any items when she initially entered the premises.
The guard confronted her and questioned the origin of the items. When she allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, he contacted the police, leading to her arrest.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was intercepted shortly after the theft.
"She gained entry through the open window, entered the bathroom, proceeded to the spare bedroom and stole two laptops," he said.
Police further allege that Makavanga had told the security guard she was visiting a regular client who resides at the complex, a claim that reportedly allowed her initial entry into the premises.
She is also alleged to have attempted to persuade the guard not to report the matter, but he instead proceeded to alert law enforcement authorities.
Part of the stolen property was recovered from her possession, along with keys believed to have been used to exit the apartment.
Residents at the complex reportedly commended the security guard for acting professionally and ensuring that the suspect was apprehended.
The suspect is expected to appear in court facing charges of unlawful entry and theft as investigations continue.
