South African authorities have issued an urgent notice calling on individuals whose identity documents were blocked before November 2022 to take immediate steps to regularise their status, warning that failure to act before 10 July 2026 could result in permanent cancellation of identity numbers.
Authorities said affected citizens must personally visit a Department of Home Affairs front office to submit written and oral representations explaining why their identity documents - which reflect their correct personal particulars - should not remain blocked or be cancelled.
Officials said the exercise is part of broader efforts to protect the integrity of the national population register and ensure identity records remain accurate and verifiable.
Individuals seeking to unblock their IDs will be required to provide supporting documentation, including original or handwritten birth certificates, clinic cards confirming birth details, hospital registers, parents' identity documents or reference books, death certificates where applicable, and any other official proof of identity.
Applicants must present themselves in person to complete the verification process.
Authorities have set a firm deadline of 10 July 2026, warning that failure to submit the required documents and representations within the stipulated period will result in cancellation of the identity number without further notice.
The department said no extensions are guaranteed and urged affected individuals to act swiftly to avoid losing access to essential civic services linked to valid identification.
The notice forms part of ongoing administrative measures aimed at ensuring the accuracy and reliability of national identity systems.
