The city of Mutare has been plunged into mourning following the deaths of its first black mayoress, Shingirai Sarah Jahwi, and Ward Three councillor, Tichaenzana Maita, over the weekend.

The two prominent community figures passed away on Saturday in a development that has been described as a significant loss not only to their families but also to the wider Mutare community.

Mrs Jahwi made history as Mutare's first black mayoress and is remembered for her contribution to local governance and community development during a pivotal period in the city's history.

A family source said mourners are gathered at her residence in Greenside and funeral arrangements are underway.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of Mrs Jahwi, who was Mutare's first mayoress. Mourners are gathered at Number 21 Kingfisher in Greenside. She is expected to be laid to rest on Wednesday. More details will be provided in due course," said the source.

Meanwhile, tributes have also continued to pour in for Councillor Maita, who served as Ward Three councillor and was widely respected for his dedication to community service and local development initiatives.

In a condolence message, the City of Mutare described Councillor Maita as a committed public servant whose contribution to the city's governance structures would be remembered for years to come.

"The passing on of Councillor Maita has left a huge void in our community. His contribution to City of Mutare's policy formulation was invaluable and his commitment to the Ward Three residents will be fondly remembered," the council said.

"We stand in solidarity with the Maita family during this difficult time and honour the legacy of a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to the betterment of our city."

Councillor Maita is expected to be laid to rest at Dangamvura Cemetery this afternoon.

The deaths of the two leaders have sparked an outpouring of grief across Mutare, with residents, civic leaders and former colleagues remembering their contributions to the city's growth and development.

Their passing marks the loss of two figures who, in different capacities, played important roles in shaping the social and civic landscape of Mutare and leaves a void that many believe will be difficult to fill.
