Three Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers have each been jailed for five years after being convicted of criminal abuse of office following an anti‑corruption operation conducted by the CID Police Anti‑Corruption Unit.
The convicted officers - Constable Prosper Muchangani (36), Constable Shelton Masvande (34) and Constable Mercy Makarimai (37) - were stationed at ZRP Murewa Traffic and deployed at Chinamhora Base.
According to a statement issued on 3 July 2026 by ZRP Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations), Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the officers were arrested on 21 December 2025 after detectives found them in possession of US$975 at a police roadblock situated at the 21‑kilometre peg along the Harare-Domboshava Road.
Investigations revealed that no traffic fines linked to the money had been officially receipted. Police also discovered that the officers had not declared the cash before commencing duty, and that there was no record of their deployment in the official register.
"The three police officers were each convicted and sentenced to five years' imprisonment at Harare Magistrates' Court on 24th June 2026," Commissioner Nyathi said.
He urged members of the public to continue reporting corruption, bribery and other criminal conduct involving police officers and civilians.
"The organisation will continue taking decisive action against any officer who engages in corrupt or criminal activities, regardless of rank or position," he said.
The conviction forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability within the security services under Zimbabwe anti‑corruption enforcement frameworks.
