Six people were killed and six others injured after a commuter omnibus veered off the Harare-Bulawayo Road and plunged into a deep, concrete-lined, water-filled gully near the Harare Drive junction on Wednesday night.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the fatal accident in a statement on Thursday, saying the crash occurred at around 10pm at the nine-kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the Tynwald Railroad Flyover.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the commuter omnibus was carrying 11 passengers when it left the roadway before plunging into the gully.

"Six people were killed while six others were injured when a kombi with 11 passengers on board veered off the road and plunged into a deep concrete-lined gully which contained water," said Commissioner Nyathi.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured were admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment.

Police said they were still working to identify the victims and notify their next of kin.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with authorities expected to provide further details once inquiries are complete.

The latest tragedy adds to Zimbabwe's growing road accident toll, with police continuing to urge motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to help reduce fatal crashes.
