THE driver of a Toyota Dyna truck that struck and killed a vehicle cleaner in Masvingo on Monday night has been charged with culpable homicide.

Masvingo Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed that Ased Jumasande (24), of Mucheke A, Masvingo, was charged following the death of Lovemore Malunga.

Malunga was a vehicle cleaner who operated mainly in the Masvingo central business district, where he was known to clean vehicles at Masvingo Central Police Station.

The accident occurred at about 9.40pm along Charumbira Road, shortly after DA Service Station.

Dhewa said Malunga was walking home to Pangolin from the city centre and was heading towards Chikato Police Station when he was struck by the truck.

"Jumasande hit a depression, and the vehicle lightly swerved and struck Malunga," Dhewa said.

Malunga sustained severe head and facial injuries and died at the scene.

Sources said Malunga was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident, although this could not immediately be independently verified.

Jumasande reportedly remained at the scene until police arrived. The Toyota Dyna sustained damage to its windscreen and one of its lamps.

Malunga's body was taken to the Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident are continuing.
